Etched in stone … or concrete, description of the first spring training game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium

Willie Mays hit the first spring training homer there in 1964. Dusty Coleman hit the last on Wednesday, a ball that sneaked over the right field wall, aided by a gust of wind. An inning later, Coleman struck out and Phoenix Municipal’s run as a Cactus League stadium came to an end.

Happily, it is not the end of the road for Muni, as we call it in these parts. ASU will move there next season. The Sun Devils used to play big games — conference games, postseason games — there in the 1960s and 1970s.
